Controversy

September9

chickfilaYou all know I stir the pot sometimes and discuss things I know will get people talking.  This is one of those times.

When I moved south, I started hearing talk about Chickfila.  I didn’t think much of it.  Then people started saying how lucky I was to live somewhere with easy access to Chickfila.  And all of the moms at the now defunct Bellevue mall gathered at the Chickfila in the food court after playing in the play area.  I noticed there were often long lines at Chickfila.  I thought I would give it a try.  I had lunch at the one in the mall.  It was fine.  Nothing worth remarking on either way – just fine.  I didn’t give it much more thought.

I continue to see that the southerns worship at the altar of the Chickfila.  The drive thru line spills out of the parking lot as you near the lunch hour.  I had the opportunity to eat there again a couple of weeks ago.  It was again fine.  I had the standard chicken sandwich pictured above.  I bought Sabrina a small kids meal with chicken nuggets.  Our total for those 2 meals was $9.20.  My sandwich was fine.  The waffles fries seemed slightly undercooked but I hear that is the way they do them.  Sabrina’s nuggets were probably the best of the fast food versions I’ve seen – actual chicken breaded lightly rather than something questionable formed into a nugget shape. They did provide some choices for sides rather than fries which is nice – but most places do that these days.

I just don’t understand the southern love of Chickfila.  I don’t dislike it but it doesn’t rate above neutral on my radar.  While I don’t eat fast food often, I can tell you that McD’s has the best fries, Hardee’s the best burgers (mushroom swiss thickburger – yum), Arby’s has the best sandwiches, and Sonic is only good for drinks.  I guess I can give Chickfila the best nugget category but we almost never order that kind of thing so it seems like a throw away category.

So someone from the south school me.  What is all the fuss about? What am I missing?

I hear that none of thier sandwiches are over 500 calories. So I guess it’s the “healthiest” FF chain? Ironic considering the southern love of grease. πŸ™‚

As far as “fast food” goes, I believe that it’s a bit healthier than the alternatives to chicken sandwiches and nuggets. The chicken is real chicken and not compressed chicken parts.

I likes me a Chickfila, but we don’t have them here. However, I do agree with the Arby’s sandwiches statement. I am a connoisseur of turkey sandwiches and as far as fast food chains goes Arby’s has the best.

We love Chickfila. Although I agree with you that it may not be “write home about” there are other things I love. 1) I love that they aren’t open on Sunday. I think it’s nice that their workers have at least one day a week to be with their family. 2) They are very big on scholarships for their workers. 3) At least here, they have playgrounds in their restaurants – Alex loves to play there. 4) I like their choices – especially the fruit! (Alex loves him some fruit) 5) They are VERY family friendly – more so then most fast food restaurants. They help me to my table with my food (which was really helpful when Alex was little and I had to hold him), they come around and get you refills on drinks, they actually clean the tables! 6) At the one we go to – they will take you out to your car with a large umbrella if it’s raining.

    I love chickfila-
    1. Fruit salad for Bug and I. he loves it, I love it
    2. Best chicken sandwiches ever- I tired the new one on a wheat bun this weekend- YUM
    3. play area- can you say rainy day playground???
    4. Educational items in the kids meals. We are getting the over 3 year old stuff, while Bug might not listen to me read it, he loves the stickers. I can deal with stickers easier than more toys.

We recently got one in our city (last 2 years) but before that I missed them. The one closest to us is still further than I will drive regularly, but when we are shoe shopping for Bug, it is a treat to stop there and play. I have heard we are getting one closer to our house, but it will still be out of our way- so it will just be a closer treat.

But what I like most of all, the counter folks who understand what service is all about and go out of thier way to give you good service. Some folks at McD’s and other places seem more interested in texting then actually dealing with a customer standing in front of them.

    Love to you,
    Deb

Honestly, I had never even eaten at a Chick Fil A until I started high school, and one of my besties’ dad owned a few of them around town. So we ate there ALL. THE. TIME.

So now it’s kind of a homecoming for me.

But yeah, they stated it above.. very family friendly; real, healthy food that you don’t feel bad about feeding to your family; GREAT iced tea; and my favorite? If your kids don’t want the toy in their meal (it’s usually some religious-themed book or some other crap), you can return it to the front counter for a free small ice dream.

Oh, and their ice dreams. SO GOOD.

We don’t have one here and I would imagine that it will take MN years to get one. Which is fine. We just got our first and second Sonic and I still do not understand what the fuss is AT all. And to be honest, I’m kind of creeped out by the fast food play places – so your kid just had french fries, ketchup and a milk shake and now he can play in the play place? And who cleans that?

I love the healthy version of their nuggest, all white meat, fruit cup for the side and a little secret is you can turn in the toy for a free ice cream cone!
We have one about every few blocks here and they are JAMMED for hours at lunch. It’s very popular for pregnant women to want them at their showers.

You’re not missing a dang thing, in my opinion. Born and raised (and still live) in TN and I dislike chickfila very much. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rolled my eyes at my chickfila loving husband. Crowds and bland/cheap quality food? I’ll pass.

  16. On September 9th, 2009 at 7:03 pm Alleen Says:

You mean you didn’t wear your Steeler’s attire and go there Monday for a free sandwich???

I like their chicken sandwich better than any of the other fast food places. And like others said, I like being able to get fruit instead of fries for Gabriella. And like Kim said, they are so friendly compared to other fast food joints. They’ve also offered to help me carry food to the table when they see I have my hands full with a kid. They are a little pricey though, I’ll admit. I also like that they have caffeine-free Diet Coke. I can feed my addiction with less guilt.

Arby’s huh??? We have one literally on the corner and I haven’t been in years upon years. I always thought their “roast beef” was disgusting. So, they have other sandwiches that are good??? The hubby and I always joke about Arby’s and how empty it always is. Maybe I’m missing something.

  17. On September 9th, 2009 at 8:13 pm kelley Says:

I second what Kim said! I LOOOVE Chick fil a and what I love even more is the southern hospitality that comes with it. Their nuggets are the best. I moved to Cali from the south and was SOOOO excited when we started getting them here. I would actually drive 30 minutes to go to Chick fil a !

Oh AMEN, someone else who can’t understand what the hades the fuss is about with Chick fil. I can’t STAND it. Girls like it here and there with the nuggets but they aren’t anything to write home about it either. Didn’t have them in MN when we lived there and I can see why, LOL!!!!!!

  19. On September 10th, 2009 at 1:11 am TJ Says:

I don’t get it either. I agree that the chicken nuggets are better than other places, but the chicken sandwiches are pretty ho hum to me. I also think the waffle fries are really undercooked. I don’t even really consider going there when I’m thinking fast food. I really like Carl’s Jr. or In and Out for burgers. The BEST fast food however, is Pollo Tropical in Florida. A wonderful Puerto Rican fast food chain. I want to move back to FL just for those.

  20. On September 10th, 2009 at 6:20 am Krystal Says:

Sweet tea mixed with lemonade is my favorite drink. Chik fil a has really good tea and really good lemonade – so it’s a win! Dip any food in the polynesian sauce, and it is automatically above average πŸ™‚ Plus the play area is priceless.

  21. On September 10th, 2009 at 6:53 am Liz Says:

I totally agree. I don’t get the draw to Chik-fil-a either. I’ve tried it on several occasions thinking that I’m missing something but honestly, between the high prices and the mediocre food I just don’t think its worth it.

I worship at CFA as well. Not only is the chicken faboo (though I agree about the fries – I’ll take McDonald’s fries any day!), the customer service is fsecond to NONE. What other fast food place comes by and asks if they can refill your drink, throw away your tray or … in one surreral instance, set up a table for me before I even finished ordering and brought me my food so I could just get the boys corralled and settled. I LOVE me the CFA!

  23. On September 10th, 2009 at 8:17 am Burgh Baby Says:

Hell yeah! I don’t get it either. Milkshakes? Muy good. Glad they finally come in smaller sizes. Waffle fries? They’re good, but they aren’t fresh McD’s fries. Sweet tea? ‘Tis good. I can get just as good elsewhere. That’s where my “goods” ends. It’s not veggie friendly (Shoosh with the, “but they have fries and fruit salad,” y’all. I can live on that, but I won’t let my kid do it.). The play area is usually DISGUSTING and way too crammed. And the prices? YOWCH!

  24. On September 10th, 2009 at 9:16 am Jody W. Says:

I do like their chicken better, but it’s usually too crowded. We don’t eat much fast food if I can help it!

  27. On September 10th, 2009 at 1:23 pm Meredith from Merchant Ships Says:

I think the real reason Southerners love Chick-fil-A is that the chain is closed on Sunday to honor the Sabbath. Even if you’re not Christian, you have to respect a company that turns away profit in order to be obedient to the owner’s faith.

Local chik-fil-a stores do a lot of generous donations to school and community events which is always nice to see.

I agree that the food is a little overpriced. I’m not willing to brave 99-cent kids night to eat it, either, which is saying a lot.

  28. On September 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm Martha Says:

Living in the south now after growing up in Michigan I also didn’t see the appeal. But now with a 3 yr old, and a pool in the backyard…(I can’t relax when she plays in the backyard) I like letting her rip and roar in the play area. In this heat down here in florida playing outside isnt an option most of the summer. Their chicken sandwiches and nuggets are very good, my husband likes the chicken salad sandwich, and they do theme nights, like princess & Pirate nights or they bring Santa claus there for free photos; or Sponge Bob night…Its a good opption for restless kids.

  29. On September 10th, 2009 at 7:53 pm Laurie Mitchell Says:

I live up north and we have one in our local mall in the food court. I like that their nuggets are so good. I actually go there and buy nuggets and then go to the Chinese place and get rice and gravy…then I put the nuggets in the rice and gravy and I have my own boneless almond chicken (minus the almonds) made with ACTUAL chicken!!! πŸ™‚ Yum … why is the chicken at the Chinese fast food places disgusting (ours is called Magic Wok…and the chicken is eeewwwww….) I do like the kids educational toys in the meals too…I have never had this ice dream…I may have to check it out!!! (and I am grossed out by the play places too…germ fest…!!…glad our only Chick-Fil-A is at the mall food court!)

  30. On September 11th, 2009 at 4:57 am Julie P Says:

Best thing about chick fil a is that they have offer fruit as a side. Not apple dippers that look super preserved but an actual fruit salad type fruit cup – melon, grapes, apples etc. Its great for my daughter who loves fruit and routinely asks for that instead of fries or chicken!

  31. On September 11th, 2009 at 10:56 pm Stephanie Says:

I’ve been there once or twice, but…I’m with you. I was unimpressed. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t particularly good either. I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to stop there, that’s for sure.

All that said, I’m a bit of a “restaurant snob” and I rarely eat out (especially fast food) so perhaps I’m not the best person to ask… πŸ˜‰

But, if I had to pick a fav-or-ite chicken sandwich, it’d be Chickfila. And I guess that you might not get it bc part of our Southern DNA has genes of deep fried southern chicken running all amuck it it. That’s what scientists say when they examine us Southerners blood-related per-cu-lee-air-ee-tees under one of dem mike-row-scope thang-ies.
