Birthday fun
I thought I would share the photos from Tessa’s birthday while the rest of the blogsphere is talking about heading to NYC for BlogHer.
Awesome to see this after last year’s birthday when I was freaking out because she wouldn’t eat solids yet. She ate the whole darn cupcake this year…after licking off all of the whipped cream on top first.
She had her 2 year doctor appointment. She is 22.5 lbs which is the 5th %tile for weight…up from the 4th %tile at her last check. She is now in the 25th %tile for height. The doctor was comfortable with where she is but not enough to say “See you in a year!” We will go back for another check in 6 months. I discussed my concerns about her verbal delays. He said it is likely nothing but just to be sure referred us for a hearing check to rule out any issues there. And he said we should call Early Intervention for an evaluation and if while we are likely waiting months for the appointment, if her language suddenly explodes we can cancel it.
So funny, when I saw the cupcake I had flashbacks to last year too!! She reminds me so much of Reese. Does it on her own time!! But, I think the idea of an evaluation is a good one. Never a bad idea to be too cautious

Love the pic with the tongue all over that whipped cream! I say get the evaluation. At least in Ohio Early Intervention was free. My daughter qualified at age two and got tons of free speech therapy and occupational therapy (she also went to speech therapy that we paid for too). But it was a weekly “play group” where they did all different sorts of activities – even snack time was an opportunity for speech. They would give them one teddy graham and a little swallow of juice and if they wanted more, they had to ask for it. Even if they were completely non-verbal they had to use sign language for “more”. They also did a ton of things I would have never thought of…licking stickers, blowing cotton balls on a table all use mouth motions that help with speech (who would have known!) and then when it was time to phase out of Early Intervention, I had a special person from EI that attended all of the evaluations and was there for me when it was time to phase to the next age group (3 -5). Mine doesn’t shut up now so I know Tessa will be fine but Early Intervention for us was a huge blessing! (even being with other parents that are experiencing the same delays was beyond helpful).

I’m sorry I’m so late in wishing Tessa a happy birthday. She looks like she enjoyed that cupcake and I’m sure she’ll be hardpressed to refuse the next one.
Good point about scheduling the appts now as it just seems harder and harder to get screenings done.
